Registering to vote or updating voter registration information
Libraries aren’t always the first place people think of when registering to vote or updating their address or other information on their voter registration, but many libraries across North Carolina collaborate with their local Board of Elections to help citizens register to vote, update their voter information, or serve as a polling place during primaries, general elections, or early voting.
September 17 is National Voter Registration Day, and a number of libraries across North Carolina are participating by hosting events to help citizens register to vote or update their voter registration information.
Participating locations (including libraries and other organizations) may be found at https://nationalvoterregistrationday.org/. Check with the public library near you to see if they are hosting an event. Regardless, North Carolina residents can check their voter registration information and learn how to register or update their information through the North Carolina Board of Elections website at https://www.ncsbe.gov/. Some additional information for libraries about National Voter Registration Day is available in the SLNC Library Development newsletter.
September is also Library Card Sign-Up Month! So, if you visit your local public library and don’t yet have a library card, now is a great time to sign up.
Fun fact: There is a North Carolina State Statute that allows public libraries in North Carolina to have a staff member appointed by their board of elections to register voters in their area.
